Putting The Human Back In Recognition

September 15th, 2011 in Blog by DKovacovich

What started with a trophy has evolved into an organizational strategy. What once was a thank you is now an invitation to be great. Where there was a logo there is now a choice. The world of employee recognition has evolved with whiplash precision in the past few years. But, let’s not forget what got us here.

Everyone loves an awards banquet. Be it a luncheon to celebrate employee service milestones, a fond farewell to a retiree, or a presentation to the top revenue producers. It feels great to put on your finest dress and to be recognized among your peers for your extraordinary effort. It is the essence of our professional existence: that moment we pass the trophy to our son, thank our significant other for their patience, and receive a Thank You from the CEO.

Let’s not pretend otherwise…

There is no doubt that we live in a time where technology is more advanced than it has ever been. Companies are being founded every day that make saying “Thank You” easier. As if to say that your moment in the sun should be limited for the sake of efficiency.

I understand limiting server space to save on unnecessary cost. But, the moment you cancel the awards banquet and throw your best employees a gift card, you commoditize your organizational existence. With all the ways technology has saved us time and streamlined workflow there are some things computers cannot account for.

The degree of your gratitude cannot be expressed through an email. 50 cups of coffee hold no memento of achievement.

Technology has allowed us to address 1000 people in one tweet. Let’s not confuse social strategy with genuine gratitude.

If I put 2,500 hours into making the organization better this year I am likely a loyal employee. I identify with the purpose of the organization, love my boss and appreciate the products and services we bring to market. All I need in return is a handshake and a forum to thank my wife her patience in the moments that work replaced life.

The more things change, the more they stay the same!
